"The sea always sounded different at the edge of summer."

What if the key to your future was buried in someone else's forgotten past? What if the letters that could have changed everything were never sent — and it took seventy years for anyone to finally read them?

Summer of Waiting by debut author Diana Deak is the kind of novel that earns its place on your all-time favorites shelf. Part contemporary romance, part wartime mystery, part deeply human meditation on loss and creative rebirth — this is a story that reaches inside you and rearranges something.

It has already been described by early readers as "unforgettable," "quietly devastating," and "the book I didn't know I needed this summer." And right now — for five days only — it's completely free on Kindle.

What Is Summer of Waiting About?

Clara James returns to her late grandmother's cottage after ten years away. She's escaping a failed relationship, a stalled art career, and the haunting words of a critic who once called her work "technically skilled but emotionally flat." She hasn't touched a brush in over a year. She's not looking for love. She's barely looking for herself.

But the cottage has a secret. In the attic, beneath a faded quilt, sits a locked trunk. And when Clara finally opens it, she finds bundles of wartime love letters — written by her grandmother, addressed only to the initial J — letters that were never sent. Letters that nobody was supposed to find.

Enter Eliot Carter: a literature professor staying nearby, researching local WWII correspondence for his next book. Reserved, charming, and carrying wounds of his own. He offers to help Clara decode the letters. And slowly — through salt air and summer storms, through shared meals and beach fires and the intimacy of reading someone else's most private words — they begin to decode each other.

"It began with an attic full of dust and forgotten letters. With ink faded by time and words never sent. It began with the quiet return of a woman seeking something she couldn't name, and a man trying to piece together a love that wasn't his but still felt like it could be."
— From the Preface

As Clara and Eliot uncover the identity of her grandmother's secret love — a Black American soldier stationed overseas, in a time when their relationship was not just scandalous but forbidden — the historical mystery deepens. And as the past reveals itself letter by letter, so does the present. So do Clara and Eliot, to themselves, and to each other.

The Moments You Will Not Forget

🏠 The Return — Chapter 1
Clara arrives at the cottage and feels the weight of ten years of avoidance. The cottage whispers. The attic waits. And the sea sounds exactly as she remembered — like a balm, or a memory, or both.
🔑 The Locked Trunk — Chapter 4
A brass key, a velvet pouch, a trunk that creaks open reluctantly. Inside: stacks of letters tied with string. The first one she opens changes everything she thought she knew about her grandmother.
⛈️ The Summer Storm — Chapter 5
Trapped in the cottage during a coastal storm, Clara and Eliot open up — really open up — for the first time. Two strangers become something more dangerous: people who see each other clearly.
🔥 The First Kiss — Chapter 8
Under a moonlit beach fire, after weeks of slow-burning chemistry. Clara is thrilled and terrified in equal measure. The historical letters hint, ominously, at war-time separation and betrayal.
💔 Letters Never Sent — Chapter 12
One bundle is marked with two words that change the entire tone of the mystery: Never Sent. The letters in this bundle are angrier, more desperate. One hints at a forbidden relationship that transcended race and war.
🎨 The Art of Letting Go — Chapter 10 & 19
For the first time in over a year, Clara paints. Inspired by the letters, by the sea, by Eliot. Her final series — titled "Waiting" — becomes not just healing, but testimony to a love story that nearly vanished from history.
🌅 The Summer We Stopped Waiting — Chapter 20
At sunset, on the same beach where they first met, Clara and Eliot bury the final letter — a symbolic goodbye to the past. Then they choose: not to wait any longer. For anything.

Words That Will Stay With You

The sea was wild today, and I thought of you. The tide roared as if it knew my heart, and I let the waves steal your name from my lips again and again... I wish I could tell you that it gets easier. That the ache dulls with time. But it doesn't. Not when it's you. Not when every gull's cry sounds like your laugh.

— From the grandmother's letter, August 3, 1944 (The letter that was never sent)
"Some stories are written in books. Others in brushstrokes and tides. And some — perhaps the most powerful — are written in the spaces between what was said and what never was."
— Diana Deak, Preface
"About the letters we send, the ones we keep, and the ones we bury in the sand when we're finally ready to stop waiting."
— Diana Deak, Preface
"Everything deserved a scar to prove it had lived."
— The grandmother's quiet wisdom, Chapter 2
"It's like stepping into a photo album you forgot you owned."
— Clara, Chapter 1 (on returning to the cottage)
"It's a novel for readers who believe that some stories are meant to be found — not finished."
— Introduction

More Than a Love Story

Most romance novels give you a meet-cute and a happy ending. Summer of Waiting gives you something rarer: a story that asks what it costs to wait too long — and what it might mean to finally stop.

The historical storyline is not decorative. The grandmother's forbidden love with a Black American soldier during WWII is a genuine, emotionally complex examination of race, society, and sacrifice in mid-20th century America. The letters she wrote — and never sent — are an act of protest, of grief, of preservation. They are literature inside literature.

And the contemporary love story between Clara and Eliot never feels rushed. Diana Deak understands that intimacy is built in silence and shared tasks — in the smell of a cottage at dusk, in two people reading the same letter from opposite sides of a table, in the moment someone sees your creative work and doesn't flinch.

This is a novel about the stories we don't tell. The art we don't make. The love we don't reach for. And one summer — finally — when all of it changes.
